Zittau (dpa / sn) - The city of Zittau wants to refrain from transporting corpses to other crematoria in Saxony for the time being.

«The possibility is considered and prepared for an emergency.

But it is not yet time, ”said Mayor Thomas Zenker on Wednesday of the German press agency.

On Tuesday, Zittau was forced to keep the dead until they were cremated in a hall, which is otherwise used to store material for floods, because of the many deaths.

In view of the cool temperatures, this is currently also possible without additional cooling technology, it said.

“We reported about it so that there would be no rumors among the population. We have to disclose that and be transparent, ”said Zenker. The reason for the situation is the currently high mortality rate, also as a result of the corona pandemic. The crematorium in Zittau can cremate a maximum of 70 dead per week. The employees here and in the registry office have been working to the limit for a long time. The medical officer for the second examination in the crematorium is now on duty every day. Zenker also mentioned other reasons why there are always delays in the funeral. Some relatives were not yet prepared for the death and took longer to produce all the necessary documents. Until then, the registry offices could not issue death certificates. "Even death is not unbureaucratic in Germany," said the mayor: "It all takes a lot of time and at the same time more people are currently dying."
