Kiel (dpa / lno) - The Kiel SPD parliamentary group leader Ralf Stegner is in favor of using hotels for the corona quarantine in certain cases.

The virus spreads faster in the private sector, the more cramped the living conditions are, said Stegner of the German press agency.

"Therefore, quarantine for proven corona or suspected corona cases in your own apartment can be counterproductive."

If isolation within the home from the rest of the family is unrealistic, accommodation on a voluntary basis in a hotel or guesthouse should be considered.

"We should do everything possible to avoid any infection," said Stegner.

Every infected family member means another person at risk of serious illness.

It is not just about avoiding deaths that hardly affect younger people.

"It is becoming increasingly clear that Corona can also lead to long-term health damage," said Stegner.

"That is why I am in favor of making appropriate offers on a voluntary basis, especially for these particularly affected families, for whom quarantine in an already cramped living situation means a significantly higher burden."

To this end, the Ministry of Social Affairs should work out insulation concepts with hotels that are ready to accept them.

He would like to ask department head Heiner Garg (FDP) to discuss the pros and cons of such a solution with the SPD, announced Stegner.

"Who is to be distributed between the apartment and hotel room and for how long, should be decided according to the local and family circumstances on site," he said.

For a 19-year-old vocational student, that would certainly have to be decided differently than for a four-year-old daycare child.

"State and or federal would have to reimburse the costs for the accommodation accordingly," said Stegner.

On the other hand, society saves much more money with every infection prevented.

"If, for example, the father of a family is not infected, then the corresponding wage replacement is saved."

In addition, costs in the health system would be saved and the corona wave could be ended more quickly.

"Because we assume that a large proportion of infections currently takes place in the private sector," said Stegner.

"And it is of course noticeable that larger families in close quarters are very often affected."

The Berlin Senate had already announced on Tuesday that it would open hotels to people who have to be in quarantine because of a corona illness or as a close contact.
