Bochum (AP) - VfL Bochum has made it to second place in the 2nd Bundesliga.

At the end of the 9th matchday, coach Thomas Reis's long outnumbered team defeated Bundesliga relegated Fortuna Düsseldorf with a clear 5-0 (1-0) and, thanks to the better goal difference, even pulled on Hamburger SV (both 17 points ) past.

The goals for the Revierclub's second home win of the season on Monday evening in the Ruhrstadion were scored by Danny Blum (6th minute) with a penalty kick, Robert Tesche (58th), Robert Zulj (73rd / 75th) and Milos Pantovic (90th + 2).

While the Revierclub is now behind front-runner SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the promotion race, a small series of successes ended bitterly for the Rhinelander after seven points from three games.

After just a few minutes, Fortuna coach Uwe Rösler was horrified when referee Frank Willenborg decided on a penalty for Bochum after studying video.

Kristoffer Peterson (6th) had held Simon Zoller by the arm in the penalty area and also saw the red card because he had thwarted a clear scoring opportunity.

Blum did not miss the opportunity to lead VfL early from the penalty spot.

Rösler immediately switched from three to four defensive chains, but with ten men it became even more difficult for Fortuna.

Although the Bochumers had much more possession of the ball, they were unable to capitalize on their excess for a long time, despite some chances.

The agile Blum (29th) missed the greatest opportunity to make it 2-0 before the break when he ran up to Fortuna goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier but hit the ball over the goal.

Düsseldorf pulled back a long way and developed little risk of goal with occasional counterattacks.

Even after the change, VfL dominated, but initially did not have many opportunities against the massive defensive.

Often the game forward was too slow and cumbersome.

In addition, Kastenmeier proved to be a sure source of support and was also on the post with a deflected Blum shot (57th).

Only one minute later, Tesche found the gap after a corner from Blum and scored the 2-0 redeeming for VfL.

After that, the Bochumers played the game to the end and jumped to second place thanks to the double strike from Zulj and the hit from Pantovic.
