Hanover (dpa / lni) - The act caused horror in Hanover four and a half years ago: At a large wedding celebration, a young woman was deliberately shot by a party guest.

The perpetrator fled to Iraq immediately afterwards.

He is said to have shot the young woman because she did not want to marry him.

Today the alleged perpetrator's cousin has to answer to the Hanover District Court because he is said to have helped his relative to flee abroad.

The 36-year-old is accused of preventing punishment.

According to the penal code, this can be punished with a fine, but also with up to five years imprisonment.

According to the district court, the young woman, a 21-year-old, was shot five times in the head by her ex-fiancé at the wedding reception.

The alleged perpetrator's cousin is said to have known, according to the court, that his relative acted out of revenge because he saw his honor injured.

He is said to have helped the shooter escape, so that he could initially evade prosecution.

It is still unclear whether the perpetrator has now been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in Iraq, as reported by "Bild", citing the lawyer of the alleged escape helper.

A spokesman for the local court was initially unable to confirm this.

When the shots rang out four years ago, there were about 300 women and men at the wedding party.

When they arrived, the officers found the critically injured woman on the ground next to men who were fighting.

They cordoned off the area around the event hall.
