Geesthacht (dpa / lno) - The maximum radioactivity value for wastewater in the Elbe during the decommissioning and dismantling of the Krümmel nuclear power plant in Geesthacht (Herzogtum Lauenburg district) will be significantly reduced according to the Vattenfall Group.

The operator announced on Thursday that a reduction to ten percent of the discharge value approved under nuclear law and previously applied for for decommissioning and dismantling will be achieved.

The nuclear power plant had reached an agreement with several environmental associations and residents interested in dismantling.

They want to set an environmental signal.

According to Vattenfall, Krümmel changed a water law application to the lower water authority accordingly in a letter on Thursday.

In parallel to the water law procedure, the reduced discharge value is stipulated in the operating regulations and also taken into account in the ongoing procedure for decommissioning and dismantling permits.

According to Vattenfall, it can be assumed that the reduced value will not be used up regularly either.

Krümmel has been permanently switched off since 2007 - except for two weeks in 2009.

A decommissioning and dismantling permit from the nuclear regulatory authority has long been applied for.

According to the responsible environment ministry in Kiel, a decision can be expected next year.

According to Vattenfall, the decommissioning and dismantling of the nuclear reactor will then take around ten to 15 years.
