Coruña.
Prison sources have indicated to Efe that in the morning count the officials have missed the inmate and when they have gone to her cell they have found her hanged.
After the discovery, they have notified 112 and the emergency services have practiced resuscitation maneuvers but have only been able to certify his death.
Porto had the entire cell collected, including belongings, which suggests that he had considered his decision, according to the sources.
Rosario Porto, a lawyer, was serving the sentence for the murder of her adopted daughter and had already served 7 years in three prisons - A Lama (Pontevedra), Teixeiro (A Coruña) and Brieva (Ávila) -.
He had already tried to kill himself on other occasions.
On November 12, 2018, she wrapped a cord around her neck while in the shower and called out to her cellmate, alerting her to what she was doing, so the officials came immediately and the episode ended there.
Although it was not proven that he wanted to end his life, from that moment on the suicide prevention protocol was intensified and he was assigned to another trusted inmate.
She had also previously tried to harm herself and on February 24, 2017, she was admitted to the hospital after ingesting a medication that she regularly took on prescription.
Precisely for this reason, in the different penitentiary centers through which he has passed, anti-suicide protocols have been applied on various occasions, three months in A Lama and three in Teixeiro.
In fact, in Brieva prison, she has been in the infirmary, always accompanied by an inmate while this protocol was also applied to her.
Prison sources specify, however, that these measures cannot be applied indefinitely because it means being in the infirmary most of the time in addition to a punishment added to the deprivation of liberty itself.
Porto was sentenced together with her husband Alfonso Basterra to 18 years in prison for the murder of her adoptive daughter, whose body was found on September 22, 2013 in a roadside in the Coruña municipality of Teo, near Santiago de Compostela.
