A Mexican television journalist was shot dead Thursday in Ciudad Juárez, near the border with the United States, Chihuahua governor Javier Corral, where the city is located, announced Friday.

He is the sixth journalist to have been assassinated since the beginning of the year in Mexico.

The journalist, Arturo Alba Medina, 49, ran a news program on a Mexican channel, the last edition of which looked at corruption in some police agencies in the region.

His body was found inside a vehicle, where eleven bullet casings were also found.

This new assassination of journalist follows that of Julio Valdivia, of the newspaper El Mundo of Veracruz, whose decapitated body was found on September 9.

In 2019, ten journalists were murdered in Mexico, according to the organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Mexico is considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists, with more than a hundred of them murdered since 2000, according to RSF.

In addition, more than 90% of these crimes go unpunished, according to RSF and Articulo 19, another press freedom organization.

This impunity created "zones of silence", regions where journalists preferred to self-censor rather than risk their lives, like what happened in the Chihuahua region after the assassination. by journalist Miroslava Breach in 2017, according to RSF.
