The head of the Libyan Presidency Council, Fayez al-Sarraj, announced - on Friday - that he had responded to calls demanding that he reverse his decision to resign from his post at the end of October.
This came in a statement by Ghaleb Al-Zaqlai, the spokesman for Al-Sarraj, which he published on his Twitter page, and was transmitted by the official "Libya" channel through its verified Facebook account.
According to the statement, Al-Sarraj thanked the House of Representatives in Tripoli, the Supreme Council of State, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, and the leaders of friendly countries.
On their invitation to continue his duties until the end of the rounds of dialogue, and the formation of a new presidential council.
He added that he "announces his response to these calls, appreciating their motives, and hopes that the dialogue committee will carry out its historical responsibility away from personal, regional and regional interests."
Last September, Al-Sarraj announced his "sincere desire" to hand over his duties to the next executive authority, no later than the end of this October, provided that the dialogue committee had completed its work.
Al-Sarraj welcomed the local and international parties' expressions of "keenness on the smooth transition of the executive authority, in the interest of stability and to avoid any political vacuum."
And he expressed - according to the statement - his hope that "all members of the committee place the interest of the nation above every other consideration, so that our country can overcome the current crisis in peace and consensus."
He also expressed his hope for achieving "the establishment of a modern civil state that endorses the peaceful exchange of power, respects human rights and preserves its dignity, and under which security, stability and prosperity are achieved."
On Thursday, the Libyan Supreme Council of State called on Al-Sarraj to continue performing his duties until the selection of a new presidential council, to avoid any political vacuum and for the sake of the country's stability.
On Friday, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas asked Al-Sarraj to continue performing his duties throughout the duration of the Libyan dialogue.
This came during a phone call between Mas and Al-Sarraj, during which they discussed the latest developments in Libya, according to a statement published by the Libyan government on Facebook.
During the call, the German minister said that Al-Sarraj’s remaining in his position is "an important matter" to ensure continuity in leading the Libyan government during this stage.
