Nearly 5 million jobs in aviation and a total of 46 million jobs in the travel sector could disappear around the world by the start of next year.

This is the forecast of experts from Atag, the Air Transport Action group.

In the United States alone, the sector could well experience a "black October" despite public aid.

Loans totaling $ 25 billion have been made to seven major airlines.

But sources close to the companies assured AFP that this was not a game-changer.

Delta, United, Southwest and American Airlines pledged in the spring not to fire anyone until September 30 in exchange for subsidies, also to the tune of $ 25 billion.

But this support is therefore coming to an end.

American Airlines has warned that if the grant is not renewed, it could lay off up to 19,000 people as of Thursday.

At United Airlines it would be a little over 13,000.

But according to an analyst at Third Bridge, the threats of massive layoffs will probably not be fully implemented.

Airlines have raised a lot of money in recent months and their situation is not as dire as it might appear in the spring.

And then, if currently customers are still not there, companies must be ready to expand their flight programs when air traffic resumes.
