A gorilla attacked this Sunday a guard who came to feed him and clean his enclosure in a zoo in Madrid.

The woman had both arms broken and suffered a head injury, according to the zoo and emergency services.

The 46-year-old victim performed daily morning chores in an interior area, protected by a triple door.

She suddenly found herself face to face with Malabo, a 29-year-old male, who then attacked her.

It happened in an area Malabo should have not been able to access.

He was tranquillised pending investigation.

He shouldn't be in a zoo.

"The zoo team managed to get the animal away and later a veterinarian team anesthetized it with a tranquilizer dart," the zoo said in a statement.

The animal was brought to its enclosure where it calmed down.

Police and the zoo are trying to figure out how the monkey entered the protected area.

The victim, who has worked in this zoo for nineteen years, was urgently hospitalized in serious condition.

The zoo said Malabo has been raised by caretakers since birth and is usually "close to caregivers."
