Swiss Stan Wawrinka won the shock of the first round at Roland Garros against another three-time Grand Slam winner, Briton Andy Murray, swept 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday.

Wawrinka, winner of the 2015 edition, will face in the second round the German Dominik Koepfer, who released the French Antoine Hoang, beneficiary of an invitation.

"I am very happy, I played very well, I am very satisfied with my level", reacted the former world No.3, today 17th, at the microphone of the former tennis player Cédric Pioline.

Despite the conditions made "very difficult" by the cold and humidity, Wawrinka said he was "very happy to be back at Roland Garros", a tournament in which he also reached the final in 2017.

Murray, former world No.1, fell beyond 100th place after hip operations that had prompted him to announce his retirement in early 2019 before reversing his decision, conceded the trifle of six breaks to finish with 6 small games registered and a rout in just over an hour and a half.

The Scotsman, who reached the final of the 2016 edition, promised to question himself after such a rout, which came to equal his worst defeat in a Grand Slam.

"I would have to take this seriously and try to understand why I put on such a performance," said Murray, 33, aware of his limitations.

"From a physical point of view, I do not expect to become the man I was before the operation again," said the double Olympic champion (2012 and 2016).
