Removing a rare tumor from the thigh of a 20-year-old woman at Tawam Hospital

The Orthopedic Oncology Team at Tawam Hospital, one of the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company - “SEHA” facilities, removed a rare type of cancer “Ewing's fungal sarcoma” outside the skeleton from the front side of the left thigh of a 21-year-old mother of two children from Syria. The patient suffers from severe pains which made her bedridden, and was transferred to Tawam Hospital due to the availability of expertise in the multi-specialty oncology center and advanced medical equipment.

The size of the tumor was 26 cm in a vertical-tail, 21 cm in width and 20 cm from the anterior-posterior side, and it weighed 2.9 kilograms and occupied several parts, and the successful operation took about 8 hours, as it required the severe complexity caused by this tumor, including Femoral artery resection and replacement A few hours of microsurgery to remove the tumor radically and treat the soft tissue defect using a skin graft completely. The patient then recovered completely and left the hospital within only 11 days, as the patient also received new adjuvant chemotherapy.

It is worth noting that this type of malignant tumor mainly affects adolescents and young adults and represents 2% of childhood cancers, and the survival rate for five years is about 70%.
