There are up to six million landmines around Cambodia, according to the BBC.

Many are working to clear away the mines, one of them is the giant pouch rat Magawa who has now received a gold medal from the organization as a thank you for his efforts.

Good miners

Since 1990, giant scorpion rats have been trained to search for mines.

It is both the sense of smell and the body weight that make them good miners.

The rat weighs just over a kilo, and therefore does not trigger the mines.

In addition, they are fast.

Magawa can search an area as large as a tennis court, in just 20 minutes.

It would take a person with a metal detector up to four days to search the same area.

Now Magawa works only half an hour a day - because of her age.

The seven-year-old rat has had several years of faithful service, and it is soon time to retire.
