The president of the United States,
Donald Trump
, has signed an executive order with which he seeks to ensure medical care for newborns during abortion procedures,
cases that occur very rarely
.
"Every baby born alive, regardless of the circumstances of their birth, has the same dignity and the same rights as any other individual and
is entitled to the same protections,
" says the order signed by Trump.
The text conditions the
granting of federal funds to hospitals
to comply with this order.
Despite the fact that current laws already protect the lives of newborns, in his executive order Trump assured that in some hospitals
medical care is denied to extremely premature
or ill
babies
, "even when the parents ask for treatment."
"It is the norm in America to recognize the human dignity and inherent worth of every newborn or other young child,
regardless of prematurity or disability,
" said the president.
Trump signed this order on the eve of his announcement of the nomination of a new judge for the US Supreme Court, who according to local media will be
the ultra-conservative Amy Coney Barrett
, and in the middle of the presidential campaign.
The ultra-conservative movement and Republicans have tried in recent years to
restrict or ban abortion rights in the United States
, something that would be closer to happening with Barrett's appointment by consolidating the right-wing majority of six to three in the High Court.
In the United States, abortion has been legal in practice since in 1973 the Supreme Court
declared any interference by the state
in a woman's decision about pregnancy
unconstitutional
.
Barrett would replace progressive Justice
Ruth Bader Ginsburg
, who passed away last week.
Republicans have tried unsuccessfully to pass laws in Congress similar to the executive order signed by Trump, although those texts
considered jail terms for doctors
who denied medical care to these newborns.
Critics of the measure argue that cases of newborns during abortions are very rare and that current laws already protect them.
