The road is now open for a final repository of spent nuclear fuel in Östhammar.

Today, the municipal board's working committee left the message that it accepts the final repository, but with certain conditions.

Thus, the last formal obstacle to stopping the final repository has been removed.

Now it is up to the government to make the final decision.

The opinion group for safe final disposal, Us, is critical of the municipality's decision because it is not clear whether the copper canisters in which the nuclear fuel is intended to be stored are really a safe method.

- Östhammar municipality should wait for the results of tests in the Äspö HRL before making a decision to approve or disapprove of the final repository being built, writes Hans Javinder, chairman of Östhammar's nature conservation association.
