A three-story residential building collapsed on Monday in Bhiwandi, near Mumbai (India).

According to a report communicated on Tuesday by the authorities, the incident caused the death of twenty people.

Research is still underway to find any survivors in the ruins.

On Monday, rescuers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) extracted 20 people alive from the rubble, including two boys aged four and seven.

Frequent collapses during the monsoon

According to a spokesperson for the NDRF, rescue teams, assisted by sniffer dogs, also found twenty bodies in the debris of cement and bricks.

On Twitter, the director general of the NDRF explained to expect an even heavier toll with “more [victims] under the rubble”.

The causes of the accident were still not known on Tuesday.

Building collapses are relatively common in India between June and September, during the monsoon season.

The intense precipitation which falls on the country tends to weaken the structures of buildings and buildings.
