Do you know why white alligators do not live so much?

What is the secret of the orange color that distinguishes the dwarf crocodile in Gabon caves?

And did you know that these reptiles climb trees and can stay under water for two full days?

In this report, the Spanish site "Super Curioso" reviews a number of interesting facts about these amazing reptiles:

1- Climbing trees

Perhaps it is interesting to know that crocodiles are among the animals that climb up trees and even stay on them.

They are usually young and small, such as the American alligator or the Mississippi alligator, which was photographed several times on tree branches more than two meters high.

Scientists believe that crocodiles climb trees to enjoy the sun's rays, because climbing cases are mainly seen in areas where the crocodiles are not exposed to enough heat.

Alligators are also believed to climb trees to better observe their surroundings.

 2- Watering butterflies

Pictures taken in Costa Rica in 2013 showed a group of butterflies hovering around a crocodile's eyes, appearing to drink his tears.

The fact is that this does not only happen with crocodiles, as it has also been observed that butterflies drink tears of turtles.

The exact reason for this behavior is not known, but it may be due to the high salt content in crocodile tears, a component that these insects need to reproduce, and the tears can provide them with some micro-nutrients, enzymes or proteins.

 3- Albino doesn't live much

There is a type of crocodile called "albino" and its color is white.

It does not live much because it cannot hide well due to its color, which makes it permanently vulnerable.

 4- Two days under water

The crocodile is the most surviving underwater animal among all the animals that breathe through the lungs.

Crocodiles can stay underwater for up to 6 hours at a time if they swim, and they may stay underwater for two days if they are at rest.

5- A nose and two eyes at the top of the head

Another interesting fact about the alligator is that the opening of its nose and eyes are located in the upper part of its head, allowing it to see and breathe when most of its body is submerged in water.

The crocodile also has a seal in its throat that prevents water from reaching the lungs when it closes its mouth.

6- Staying in water all night

Crocodiles often spend the night in the water because they are cold-blooded animals and need heat.

And at night, the temperature inside the water is higher than it is outside.

 7- A third eyelid

The eyes of the crocodiles have a third eyelid, which is a transparent membrane that moves sideways and covers the eyes when the crocodile is completely submerged under the water.

The third eyelid contains glands that secrete a kind of salty tears that keep the eyes clean, and when this liquid rises to the surface it attracts many insects.

8- An orange dwarf

In 2008, a new type of "pygmy crocodile" was discovered in Gabon, whose DNA differs from that of other species of this family.

This species is distinguished by its orange color, and it lives in caves and feeds on cockroaches and bats.

It is believed that the orange color is caused by bat droppings that secrete urea into the cave waters, which stains the skin of alligators.

 9- Death roll

If you hear about the danger of crocodiles, you should not underestimate the matter. When crocodiles grab their prey, they do not leave them easily, and they usually do what is known as the "death roll" to eliminate them and crush their bones.
