London mayor proposes new restrictions to stop the spread of "Corona"

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said on Sunday he had agreed with local council leaders and public health experts to present new restrictions to combat the Coronavirus to the central government in an effort to stem its spread in the capital.

The measures include reducing the opening hours of bars and expanding the enforcement of the wearing of masks on public transport and shops to other public places.

Khan said he would ask the government to implement the plan as soon as possible, adding that he would discuss it with Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday.

"Without adequate testing or contact tracing in London, we have no choice but to consider other measures to slow the spread of the virus," he said in a statement.

"I absolutely believe that acting early, rather than having to impose stricter measures at a later time, is the right thing to do for the sake of public health and the economy," he added.

He asked Johnson to invite him to the government's Urgent Action meeting on Tuesday, which would be attended by leaders of delegated departments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Tomorrow, Johnson will also address Parliament on the Coronavirus pandemic.
