The number of postal votes in the presidential election is expected to be record high due to the corona pandemic.

Over 80 million Americans may vote by mail and the issue has become heavily politicized in the United States.

Political scientist Jeffrey Davis is one of those who sharply criticizes Trump for trying to create concern about postal votes.

It is a tactic to reduce the population's confidence in electoral security, says Davis.

- When Trump predicts that it will be the most corrupt election in US history, he makes Americans question the entire election process, Davis says.

- He attacks the election integrity by lying about how secure postal voting is, even though he himself votes by mail.

"Did not receive ballot papers on time"

One of those who supports Trump's warnings about postal vote fraud in the United States is the lawyer Hans von Spakovsky, who works at the conservative think tank Heritage Foundation.

He believes that the Democrats do not take the problems seriously.

- In our primary elections, there was a large increase in postal voting.

Many voters did not receive their ballot papers on time, and ballot papers that were sent in were not received by election authorities in good time to be counted, Spakovsky told SVT.

No widespread cheating

Spakovsky also highlights the problem that postal voting cannot be monitored by electoral authorities:

- This means that postal votes are more prone to being stolen, altered or forged.

And voters are more likely to be forced to vote a certain way.

But whether Spakovsky's concerns ahead of this year's election are justified remains to be seen.

He has been highlighted by President Trump as an expert on election issues, but he has also been accused of greatly exaggerating the scope.

So far, postal voting in the United States has not led to widespread cheating.

When journalists investigated postal vote fraud after the 2016 election, they found a single case, reports the BBC.
