It is a unilateral decision by the United States announced by the United States Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo.

He even warns that any country that does not respect or does not apply this decision will in turn be exposed to sanctions.

A message and a thinly veiled threat to other UN member states.

Washington isolated over Iran

A month ago, the Security Council

rejected a US resolution

against Iran.

The Americans then warned that they would force their way through using the “

 snapback

mechanism

.

A mechanism that allows, in principle, Washington or any other signatory state to unilaterally force the UN to reinstate all the sanctions imposed on Iran before the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement.

However, technically, the United States having left this agreement when Donald Trump arrived at the White House, the other member countries of the United Nations believe that they no longer have the right to use this mechanism.

Friday, September 18, France, Germany and the United Kingdom responded in advance, believing that any decision or measure taken to restore the sanctions would have no legal effect.

The United States is isolated on this issue and tensions risk plunging the United Nations into an unprecedented crisis.
