A 60-year-old man, suspected of having tried to kidnap his wife, escaped Wednesday evening from the gendarmerie in Ghisonaccia, in Haute-Corse, where he was in police custody and was still at large on Thursday.

The man was sentenced in immediate appearance on August 10 to ten months suspended imprisonment and two years of prohibition to approach his wife by the Bastia judicial court for acts of harassment.

He appealed against this decision on August 12, said the prosecutor of the Republic of Bastia, Arnaud Viornery.

"He took advantage of a moment of inattention"

Just days later, on August 16, he tried to kidnap his wife, who wanted a divorce, an attempt "which was unsuccessful due to the intervention of a neighbor", added the magistrate.

"He then fled and was wanted and arrested in Ajaccio on Tuesday," after more than two weeks of research, said the prosecutor.

Placed in custody at the Ghisonaccia gendarmerie brigade, where he resides, "he took advantage of a moment of inattention by the investigator to flee," said the magistrate who assured that there was "Particular vigilance by the police to prevent the partner from being subjected to violence or threats from her spouse".

"The active searches carried out since last night unfortunately did not allow the police to locate him," said the prosecutor.
