His is an unusual case. We are talking about Margarita, custodian of the Romanian Crown, who has more than recognized her title and the treatment of Majesty in her country, Romania, a former Soviet republic that has shown that in the 21st century this system can coexist perfectly with the monarchy . Hence, one can speak without exaggeration of Romania as a crowned republic.

Margarita (71 years old) is, by right, queen since the death of her father, King Michael, in December 2017. But she has never used this title. However, as head of the Royal House - the first woman to lead the dynasty in more than 150 years - she does use the treatment of Majesty, which makes her an equal among her royal cousins, including Felipe VI of Spain or Elizabeth II of England - by the way, in her youth there was talk of a wedding between Margaret and Prince Charles , although in reality she with whom she had a relationship was with the politician Gordon Brown.

The Romanian royal family plays such an important institutional role that, we insist, even though we are dealing with a republic, when polls are made on political leaders, the princess is included naturally, as before was King Michael, who was the favorite cousin of our Reina Sofía. In a May poll it was reflected that today the most popular leader is President Klaus Iohannis, with 43% acceptance, followed, yes, by the custody of the Crown Margarita, with 31%.

With its palaces

Miguel de Hohenzollern, forced into exile shortly after World War II after the establishment of the communist regime in Romania, was able to return to his homeland after the fall of the Ceaucescu regime in 1989 . As part of the process of national reconciliation, the new republican authorities urged their last monarch to settle in Bucharest, returned to him many of the royal family properties confiscated by the communists, and favored the Crown's participation in public life. Furthermore, they restored to Michael I the title of king, which he held until his death, at the age of 96.

A year before his death, already in very delicate health, the highly respected monarch abdicated his first-born Margarita , who had been recognized as crown princess in 1997 after a change in the dynastic rules by which a woman was finally allowed to be a carrier. of the rights to the crown.

We are, then, before a queen without a throne but with a scepter. Since 1997, when the princess settled in Bucharest after an already long life in Switzerland , she has not stopped participating in diplomatic activities in defense of Romanian interests. Together with her father, the king, she was a dedicated activist until her country's accession to NATO or the European Union was achieved. In this field, last October, during an official trip to the Netherlands, he delivered a conference in which, with a tone far removed from court diplomacy, he accused the community institutions of double standards in their treatment of his country. The Romanian press and the political class applauded their queen , whom many consider as their best ambassador.

For years, a regulation of the Royal House has been discussed in Parliament as "a legal person of public utility, independent and apolitical, committed to the preservation of the traditions and values of the State and to the promotion and development of Romania". At the moment, the Government has just extended for the next 49 years the transfer to the royal family of the Elisabeta Palace , on the outskirts of Bucharest, as residence and institutional headquarters.

A scandal in the family

Margarita has just completed 24 years of marriage to Prince Radu, a former actor who had hopes of becoming President of the Republic who has had a hard time being accepted. They do not have kids. And, although things are going from strength to strength today for the dynasty, many monarchists continue to lament the scandal of Prince Nicolás - Margarita's nephew - who was called to be the heir and even one day king if the institution is fully recovered.

Everything spoiled in 2015, when his grandfather stripped him of the title of prince and separated him from the line of succession, after learning that he had made an adviser pregnant and that he later tried to ignore paternity, which he only assumed years later, already as any ordinary citizen.
