José Filomeno Dos Santos, 42, was prosecuted for fraud and influence peddling for having illegally brought out of the country, with the help of three accomplices, 500 million dollars. A maneuver that would have allowed them, according to Angolan justice, to embezzle nearly 1.5 billion dollars. The four defendants were also acquitted of the count of money laundering.

This is a new episode in Angolan President Joao Lourenço's crusade against corruption since his election in September 2017. Several relatives of the former head of state José Edouardo Dos Santos have been ousted from the positions they held in the head of institutions and public enterprises. Among them, Isabel Dos Santos , disembarked from Sonangol, the national oil company. The one who is presented as the richest woman on the continent has fraudulently accumulated more than two billion dollars, at the expense of the Angolan economy, according to an investigation by a consortium of journalists. She was indicted by Angolan justice a few days after her revelations.
