Yesterday, Region Kalmar announced that eight people had tested positive for covid-19 in a ward at the hospital. Five of them were staff, two patients and a relative.

On Thursday, the news came that three more of the staff have tested positive.

So far, the infection appears to be isolated to only one ward in the hospital. Region Kalmar does not want to say which department it is about.

- There are no signs that it is in several places, says Per-Åke Jarnheimer, acting. infection control doctor in Kalmar County.

Super spreaders may have contracted the infection

It has not yet been determined who brought the infection into the ward, but according to Per Åke Jarnheimer, there are many indications that it is a so-called "super-spreader", a highly contagious person - and not an expression of a second wave of infection in society, as many feared.

- I would not say that it is a trend break. It's a lot about bad luck that someone who is extra contagious has made it a big spread of infection in a sensitive environment where it spreads easily, he says.

Waiting for more test answers

About 150 people, patients in the ward, patients who have been allowed to go home, staff and relatives have been tested. The majority of the test results that have been analyzed have been negative, but more answers are still awaited.

Already yesterday, the region made the decision to introduce an admission ban on the department and full protective equipment for the staff, with both visors and mouth guards. In normal cases, staff only work in visors if the patient does not have symptoms of covid-19.
