The French Fiona Ferro is now one of the 50 best players in the world in the WTA ranking, published on Monday, after winning in Palermo (Italy) the first tournament played on the women's circuit in five months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ferro, 23, went with the second title of his career from 53rd to 44th in the world (1267 points).

She is now following Kristina Mladenovic (42nd, 1335 pts) for the place of N.1 French.

Estonian Anett Kontaveit, whom she beat 6-2, 7-5 in the final, has grabbed two places and is ranked 20th in the world hierarchy.

The Italian Camila Giorgi jumped 18 places, beaten in the semi-finals in Palermo by Ferro and now 71st in the world.

The Australian Ashleigh Barty, who will skip the rescheduled US Open at the end of August in New York, remains well ahead of the Romanian Simona Halep and the Czech Karolina Plískova.
