Police in Hong Kong arrested seven founders of the newspaper Suspected violation of the National Security Act August 10 12:05

Hong Kong police arrested seven founders of a Hong Kong newspaper known for its critical tone in China on suspicion of violating the National Security Act. Since the enforcement of the Hong Kong National Security Maintenance Act, the tightening of people with foreign ties and prominent activists has become even stronger.

According to Hong Kong police and others, seven people including Mr. Hidetomo Rei, the founder of a Hong Kong newspaper known for its critical tone in China, were arrested.

Police say that Mr. Rei and others collaborated with foreign powers and harmed national security, and there is a suspicion that they violated the Hong Kong National Security Maintenance Law that cracks down on anti-governmental movements. It is not clear what kind of behavior was violated by the law.

Mr. Rei is known for appealing to the international community about Hong Kong's problems such as visiting the United States in July last year and meeting with Secretary of State Pompeio, and together with 12 prominent democrats, he went to Hong Kong this June. He was charged with calling for a memorial meeting for the Tiananmen Incident, and the trial continues.

After the enforcement of the law at the end of June, the police in Hong Kong ordered six democratic activists operating abroad at the end of June on the suspicion of violating the Hong Kong National Security Act. We are further tightening up our efforts towards famous activists.
