Heavily equipped riot police met over ten thousand furious protesters in the central parts of the city during the night. Several ministries were stormed and proclaimed the "headquarters of the revolution" by angry people, who were then driven away by the military.

Jumanah Zabaneh, one of the protesters on the spot, tells TT that there is now no return.

- There is a clear before and after the explosions. Now we must maintain momentum in order to bring about change.

"Very aggressive"

Stina Blomgren, SVT's Middle East correspondent, was also present at the riot.

- The protesters demand the resignation of the government. One does not trust the politicians who allowed thousands of tons of highly explosive material to be stored in the port for so many years. There are popular protests, but it was very violent last night. I saw for myself how the military and police attacked the protesters with tear gas and rubber bullets. It was done in a very aggressive way.

The question is whether Lebanon is at a crossroads right now - whether this disaster can lead to what protesters here have been demanding since October last year: an end to corruption in the country. I've never seen an anger like the one I saw yesterday.

Minister resigns

On Sunday morning, Manal Abdel Samad, Lebanon's information minister, announced his resignation.

This is because he believes that the regime is responsible for the massive explosion earlier this week, but that they have also failed to implement significant reforms in the country. But the country's Prime Minister Hassan Diab remains.

At the same time, a crisis package from the UN will be discussed at a digital donor conference during the day, led by French President Emmanuel Macron.

- The Prime Minister says that he will propose a new election in the country. But that means a delay, a process that takes several months. The demonstrators demand a quick change, it is obvious that they will not be satisfied with a proposal for new elections, says Stina Blomgren.

- The anger among the population is very great, it is incredibly palpable.
