In an interview with Handelsblatt, Minister of State at the German Foreign Ministry Niels Annen said that the US extraterritorial sanctions against close partners and allies "is a serious interference with national sovereignty."

“The tone and content of the recently sent threatening letters to German companies is completely inappropriate,” he said.

Annen stressed that the energy policy of Germany and Europe "is decided exclusively in Berlin and Brussels, and not in Washington."

Earlier, the Handelsblatt newspaper reported that US senators had sent a letter to the operator of the German port of Sassnitz calling for an end to work to support the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

The letter is signed by Senators Ted Cruise, Tom Cotton and Ron Johnson.

German MP, representative of the faction "Alternative for Germany" Steffen Kotrets called for an "immediate and direct response" to the threats of the senators.
