Nutritionist reminds: teenage obesity harms more than
10-year-old boys suffering from fatty liver

There is a small fat man in the family, and many parents don't take it seriously, and even think that "the child is growing up, and a little fat is good for the foundation." As everyone knows, the impact of adolescent obesity on children is far greater than expected. A few months ago, a clinical nutritionist at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University admitted to a 10-year-old boy who suffered from fatty liver. Not only his family, but many people find it incredible that he has suffered from fatty liver at such a young age. Fortunately, under the scientific guidance of a nutritionist, he intervened in time. Three months later, he lost 11 pounds and successfully got rid of fatty liver.

10-year-old boy suffers from fatty liver and loses 11 pounds to restore health

Xiaoye is 10 years old this year. Three or four months ago, he weighed 54.7 kg at a height of 145 cm. In fact, in November last year, he went to the hospital for a checkup due to obesity. It was found that his bone age was too early and his triglycerides and cholesterol were high. The doctor suggested that he lose weight. This caused his parents to pay attention to his weight.

In order to control Xiaoye's weight within a reasonable range, his mother tried every means to help him lose weight. However, the 10-year-old child is in the developmental period, and it is not easy for him to control his diet. After a few months of groping, it still has no effect.

In the first half of this year, she took online classes at home and exercised less daily. Not only did Xiaoye not lose weight, she also found high levels of insulin and uric acid, and mild to moderate fatty liver disease. This surprised parents again: Isn't fatty liver more common in middle-aged and elderly people? The child was only 10 years old, and he also suffered from fatty liver!

Parents worried that the consequences would be more serious if they continued to develop like this, so they sent Xiaoye to the Clinical Nutrition Department of the Third Hospital of Guangzhou Medical College for treatment. The nutritionist helped him to manage his weight. After three months of scientific diet, the weight of the lobule dropped to 49.4 kg, the total cholesterol was reduced from 5.98 (the standard is below 5.18) to 3.87, and the triglyceride was reduced from 3.04 (the standard is 0~1.7). ) Is reduced to 0.49, and the regular physical indicators are all within the standard range.

"I cook for my child according to the recipe given by the nutritionist. He has a lot of nutrition every day. He insists on swimming every weekend and does not need to exercise too much. He just walks home as much as possible after class. After three months, his weight dropped to 49.4 kg. The fatty liver is gone, and the body is relaxed!" Xiaoye's mother was very happy.

In the past three months, Xiaoye did not need to go on a hungry diet like she thought, but she successfully lost her weight and grew two centimeters taller!

Scientific diet + exercise to prevent adolescent obesity

How did Xiaoye lose weight and successfully "get rid of" fatty liver? Zeng Qingshan, director of the Clinical Nutrition Department of the Third Hospital of Guangzhou Medical College, said that the key lies in scientific diet + exercise:

  1. Eat as needed and cultivate healthy eating habits.

Eating too much to gain weight, eating too little is not balanced or getting fat. Children in the growth and development age of Xiaoye must ensure that they "eat on demand" every day, with balanced food thickness, and avoid over-cooking.

Overnutrition or imbalance is the most important factor leading to obesity in adolescents. Advocate a scientific diet, eat less meals outside, home cooking with less oil and salt; eat less junk food; eat more fruits and vegetables, less fat; drink more boiled water, drink less beverages; eat more coarse grains and eat less refined grains.

  2. Strengthen physical exercise and develop a good habit of loving sports

Many young people are obese mainly because of lack of exercise. Appropriate increase in exercise volume and exercise time can consume excess body fat. Parents should accompany their children to participate in outdoor activities in their spare time, such as running, climbing, cycling, etc., so that children can develop a good habit of loving sports from an early age.

Zeng Qingshan pointed out that many adolescents who are obese are prone to try unhealthy ways to lose weight, such as dieting or taking weight-loss drugs, which may lead to overeating after excessive hunger and fall into a vicious circle. She suggested that parents should guide their children to follow "nutrition intervention + regular exercise + regular body composition testing", develop good diet and exercise habits from an early age, and lay a good foundation for subsequent healthy growth and development.

Obesity hazards are often found to be alert to these abnormalities

Grandparents might think that only healthy and cute children can be healthy and cute, and only a little fat can be blessed. Therefore, many parents don’t take it seriously, and even think that “children are growing up, and a little fatter is good.” As everyone knows, the impact of obesity on children is far greater than expected! Zeng Qingshan said that obesity can bring the following five types of hidden dangers to children:

  1. Obesity affects height

Obesity can reduce the secretion of growth factors by the pituitary gland, and the final height of obese teenagers may not be able to catch up with the height of their normal peers.

  2. Obesity affects body shape and mental health

Obese children are overweight, which can cause load pressure on the lower limbs, easily cause O-legs, eight feet, etc., which may further lead to inferiority, incompatibility, and mental health of obese teenagers.

  3. Obesity can easily induce respiratory diseases

Obese children have increased fat in the pharynx, chest and abdomen, which can affect normal breathing and are susceptible to respiratory diseases.

  4. Obesity affects cardiopulmonary function

Obese children's heart and lungs need to increase circulation and breathing to meet the needs of the body, which is equivalent to adding a burden to the heart and lungs.

  5. Obesity increases the risk of chronic diseases

The changes in adipose tissue function and the increase in BMI occur at the same time, and too much fat in adolescence can cause preclinical changes in metabolism and cardiovascular, and increase the risk of diabetes and arteriosclerosis.

Zeng Qingshan reminded that when the child has the following abnormal conditions, he needs to seek medical treatment in time:

  Overweight has abnormal indicators caused by obesity, metabolic diseases and other problems, as well as psychological problems such as anxiety and low self-esteem;

The weight gain is abnormal. If the increase exceeds 4 kg per year, normal adolescents will increase 2 kg per year from 2 years old to before puberty.

Suspected insulin resistance, such as black spine-like pigmentation on the neck and underarms of the child, requires immediate medical attention.
