• Death Carlos García-Calvo dies
  • Opinion.'Aló Reina Letizia: Letizia, the crown is a woman's thing '

At The Other Chronicle we had big plans for Carlos. A month ago we had seized his super-read Aló Reina Letizia column , in which he dissected the consort's outfits with his fine and celebrated clinical eye. In recent years, García-Calvo, who died at his Madrid home on Tuesday, July 28 at age 78, had become known for his not-so-fierce criticism of Felipe VI's consort, but Carlos always had much more to tell that his analyzes on the consort's rags.

His chronicles on the hectic social life of the Madrid Movida in the magazine La Luna in Madrid became essential along with those of Francisco Umbral and other journalists and intellectuals of his generation. If there was one thing that distinguished Carlos's texts, it was his acid sense of humor , his great knowledge of literature and the history of fashion, and above all his snobbery . Carlos was a well traveled man due to his father's profession, he spoke English and French perfectly , he had grown up in Argentina, and that placed him above many editors educated in Franco's Spain.

In the 90s, he was the first fashion critic of Pasarela Cibeles to pass Olympic neutrality. At that time he knew the fame first hand by participating in the Extra Rosa program presented by Ana Rosa Quintana and Rosa Villacastín. He became a true rock star, there was hardly anyone in Spain who did not recognize him on the street, and that he loved because, like the great figures, his ego, like his culture, was of considerable size .

Any designer of the moment feared being skinned in one of its columns. Carlos was a total celebrity who became friends with Manolo Blahnik, Jaime de Marichalar and members of the most select and aristocratic circles in Madrid. One of his weaknesses was the old ladies of the aristocracy, whom he never stopped calling ladies of , rather dead than rude.

Carlos was a character out of a Proust novel, a great esthete who knew a lot about titles and elegance.

He also worked as public relations for LVMH and organized dinners with very interesting characters and was able to seat a left-wing politician and a marquise at the same table.

His last article was published on July 8 in The Other Chronicle. Entitled Letizia, the crown is a woman's thing , once again offering her opinion on the Queen's style.
