The Spanish government reaffirmed Tuesday that the country was "safe" for tourists despite the sharp rebound in the epidemic which has led France, Germany and the United Kingdom to advise against travel to certain regions or to re-establish a quarantine.

“We want to send out a clear message of confidence,” government spokeswoman Maria Jesus Montero said. Spain is "a safe destination which has prepared and strengthened itself to cope with the virus and new outbreaks", she added at the end of the Council of Ministers.

"A good (health) situation in most of the country"

“People who usually visit our country know that one of our strengths is the quality of our health system,” said Maria Jesus Montero. “All the data indicates that we have a good (health) situation in most of the country,” she said.

Spain, which officially counts more than 28,400 deaths from the pandemic, has seen the number of cases jump in recent weeks.

Due to this resumption of the epidemic, France recommended Friday to its nationals to avoid traveling to Catalonia while Germany on Tuesday advised against "non-essential" and tourist trips to Aragon, Catalonia and Navarre.

London for its part restored Sunday a quarantine of two weeks for all travelers returning from Spain. A measure criticized Monday evening by the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez according to whom certain Spanish regions such as the Balearics or the Canaries are "safer than the United Kingdom".
