In a debate article in DN, party leaders Ulf Kristersson (M) and Nyamko Sabuni (L) want nuclear power legislation to be renewed and they propose that smaller reactors be built in the country.

But Minister of Energy Anders Ygeman (S) does not agree.

- Sweden has the largest electricity surpluses ever and the lowest electricity prices in a very, very long time, he says to Expressen.

Can be built at the factory

Carl Berglöf, an expert in nuclear power plants at Energiföretagarna, says that it is entirely possible for Sweden to have small reactors in different locations.

- Small reactors can be built at the factory and then shipped out where they should be. In this way, you can build them faster and also reduce the cost, says Berglöf.

What are the disadvantages of them?

- A different infrastructure is required where nuclear materials can be handled and the areas must be monitored in a good way.

Investigated in several countries

In several other European countries, the discussion on smaller nuclear power plants is in full swing.

- It is quite possible to build smaller reactors in smaller cities and in Finland, Poland and Estonia this is something they are investigating to do instead of, for example, burning coal for district heating, says Carl Berglöf.

When could we have them in Sweden?

- If we talk about the more advanced ones, they could exist within a 20-year period. They could then help wind turbines or solar panels and be a complement when it is not windy or the sun is not shining, says Berglöf.
