July 25, 2020 “It is an unmanageable situation. If the government does not proclaim the state of emergency for Lampedusa, I will do it. " The Mayor of Lampedusa, Totò Martello, goes straight to the heart of the problem.

"The hotspot is no longer able to accommodate migrants - he continues - the responsibility for this emergency cannot fall on the mayor, the municipal administration and the Lampedusans".

Words that are nothing more than the chronicle of the latest barrage of landings in the the island, three in the last few hours, and the situation in the island's hotspot,

currently hosting over a thousand migrants, ten times the maximum capacity expected.

"Today there will be no ferry transfers to Porto Empedocle - underlines the mayor Martello - and meanwhile the boats from Tunisia are continuing to land on the island".

Seven small boats were blocked in the night in front of Lampedusa, a total of 203 Tunisians were on board. There are currently 1,027 migrants on the island.

A group, the latest arrivals about fifty, were not even brought to the hotspot which is now in full emergency, but was held under the gazebo of the Favarolo pier. They wait to be sorted.

The first consequence of the overloaded hotspot is that policemen on duty have difficulty identifying migrants who disembark.

During the night, the patrol boats of the Coast Guard and of the Guardia di Finanza spotted and docked boats with a minimum of 15 people and a maximum of 55.
