22 July 2020 The Minister for the Environment confirms it: "The plastic tax will start from January 1, 2021. We have suspended it for the Covid emergency, but I can confirm that it will come into force next year". So Sergio Costa in a press conference on Facebook with the foreign press.  

The plastic tax, foreseen in the 2019 budget law, was to enter into force in July 2020. A tax of 45 cents per kilogram on the consumption of single-use items - including tetrapak containers - to be paid by those who produce, buy or import these products. The income for the state coffers was estimated in 140 million euro in 2020 and 521 million in 2021.

Contrary SMEs
The new sugar and plastic taxes, which the government has confirmed since January 2021, do not appeal to small and medium-sized enterprises in the sector of sugary soft drinks. The plastic tax instead it will cause a 50% increase in procurement costs on plastics, without excluding the 100% recyclable Pet used by the sector. Add to this an increase in the administrative-bureaucratic load produced by the two new taxes with the introduction of load registers and unloading and various communications to be completed every month ".
