On Thursday, US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Schenker attacked the role of European countries in Libya and said that they could do more, and that the maritime interdiction they carried out was limited to Turkey only.

Schenker said - in press statements - that Europe can do more in Libya by denouncing the Russian "Wagner" company, and other countries such as the UAE and Egypt, which violate the United Nations arms embargo.

The European official added that the Europeans are proud of their mission in the Mediterranean aimed at helping to enforce the United Nations arms embargo on Libya, "but the only interceptions carried out by the European Union targeting Turkish military materials to Libya."

He said that no one intercepts the Russian planes, no one intercepts the Emirati planes, and no one intercepts the Egyptians.

"If they were serious, I think, they would criticize everyone, all the parties involved in the conflict when they violated the arms embargo, but they might fear the Russian response," he said.

Sanctions Committee

In the context, the Al-Wefaq government submitted a request to the UN Security Council to hold a hearing for the Libya Sanctions Committee; To discuss ongoing violations of the arms embargo by the UAE and other countries.

Libya's delegate to the United Nations, Taher Al-Sunni, said in a tweet that he submitted an application to the presidency of the Security Council to hold a hearing for the sanctions committee and the expert team for Libya, and in the presence of the countries involved in violating the arms embargo.

He pointed out that these countries have contributed to supporting the aggression against Tripoli and its environs since April of last year.

Last month, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoغلlu criticized the EU mission, saying it was not doing what was necessary to prevent arms shipments from other powers to Libya, including that France sent to Haftar's forces.

It is noteworthy that the European Union established the "IRINI operation" to implement the United Nations embargo on sending weapons to Libya, which caused an accident at sea last month between France and Turkey.
