“These are not commercial projects, these are the main tools of the Kremlin to operate and expand European dependence on Russian energy supplies,” he said during a briefing.

According to him, the State Department updated the recommendations under the CAATSA law (On Confronting America’s Opponents with Sanctions) to include the Nord Stream 2 projects and the second thread of the Turkish Stream.

“These actions put investments and other actions related to Russian export gas pipelines at the risk of US sanctions,” Pompeo explained, emphasizing that the projects allegedly jeopardize “trans-Atlantic security”.

He added that this is a clear signal to those who are “participating in malicious Russian projects.”

"Get out now or there will be a risk of consequences," said the Secretary of State.

Earlier, the German Foreign Ministry said that possible US sanctions are obviously aimed at stopping Nord Stream-2, and that they are unacceptable.

As the German Chancellor Angela Merkel emphasized, possible restrictive measures on the part of the United States with respect to the project contradict the notions of law.
