Almost one in nine humans were chronically undernourished in 2019, a proportion set to worsen due to the Covid-19 pandemic, according to an annual UN report released on Monday.

Latest estimates indicate that hunger affected approximately 690 million people last year, 8.9% of the world's population, says a report by the Food and Food Organization of the United Nations. agriculture (FAO), written with the assistance of the International Fund for the Development of Agriculture, UNICEF, the World Food Program and the World Health Organization.

60 million more people than in 2014

That is 10 million more people than in 2018 and 60 million more than in 2014. “If the trend continues, it is estimated that by 2030, this number will exceed 840 million people. It clearly means that the goal (to eradicate hunger by 2030, established by the UN in 2015) is not on track to be achieved, "said Thibault Meilland, policy analyst at FAO.

And that was without taking into account the health and economic shock caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused cascading loss of income, increased food prices, disrupted supply chains… According to the report, the global recession due to the new coronavirus is likely to drive an additional 83 to 132 million people into hunger. "These are still relatively conservative assumptions, the situation is evolving," notes Thibault Meilland.
