Local sources in Al-Diwaniyah Governorate (southern Iraq) said that gunmen burned this evening 4 trucks carrying vehicles and equipment for the American forces on the international road linking Al-Diwaniyah and Al-Muthanna governorates.

The sources added that the trucks were coming from Baghdad towards Basra, and it is believed that they were on their way to Kuwait, while the German News Agency quoted Iraqi security sources as saying that the trucks were carrying goods to one of the American bases, and gunmen set them on fire in the Al-Najmi area on the highway linking Diwaniyah And Muthanna (380 km south of Baghdad).

The security sources indicated that the trucks were driven by Iraqi drivers, who came from Basra Governorate, and that the gunmen unloaded them before setting the trucks ablaze and retreating to an unknown destination.

It is noteworthy that the United States accuses armed Iraqi factions linked to Iran of being behind repeated missile attacks targeting its embassy in the Green Zone, and its military bases where its soldiers are deployed, along with other international coalition forces in Iraq.

Armed Shiite factions, including the Hezbollah Brigades linked to Iran, had threatened to target American forces present in Iraq, if they did not withdraw in compliance with a resolution adopted by the Iraqi parliament last January, to end the foreign military presence in the country.

The decision came days after the killing of the leader of the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, Qassem Soleimani, and the deputy head of the Popular Mobilization Organization, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, in a US air strike near Baghdad International Airport.
