• France.A bus driver, in brain death after being attacked by a group that he did not let up without a mask

The French bus driver who was attacked by passengers after asking them to put on a mask to respect the rules of the fight against the coronavirus has died, his family reported on Friday.

"We decided to let him go. The doctors were supporters and so were we , " said Marie Monguillot, 18, of her father, Philippe. A little earlier, her mother Véronique announced on social networks : "My husband passed away at 5.30pm, RIP my love."

According to the Bayonne prosecutor's office, the 59-year-old driver, the father of two other girls, 21 and 24 years old, was the victim of an attack "of extreme violence" , beaten to death and seriously injured in the head, when trying to control the ticket of one person and required the use of the mask to three other passengers. The events occurred last weekend in this city in southwestern France.

The assault, and the subsequent announcement of death, sparked outrage among his colleagues and among politicians. Prime Minister Jean Castex recalled at night the bus driver, "cowardly assaulted" and assured on Twitter that "justice will punish the perpetrators of this heinous crime."

"This abject and cowardly act should not go unpunished," Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin tweeted, who was due to travel to Bayonne on Saturday.

Two men, aged 22 and 23, suspected of having beaten him were charged and jailed for "attempted manslaughter," a legal status that is likely to change due to the death of the victim.

Two alleged accomplices were also detained this week, mostly accused of "failing to assist a person in distress."
