French jihadist Tyler Vilus, sentenced on Friday in Paris to 30 years' imprisonment for crimes committed in Syria from 2013 to 2015, will be retried. The national anti-terrorist prosecutor's office (PNAT) said on Thursday that it had appealed against his conviction.

This emir of the Islamic State group, a figure in the French terrorist galaxy, was found guilty of several crimes, including having participated in the execution of two prisoners in Syria, and could therefore have been sentenced to life imprisonment, as required by the prosecution.

The special assize court had "decided not to order" this life sentence. By ordering him to 30 years' imprisonment, accompanied by a two-thirds security period, the court wanted to "leave a glimmer of hope" to Tyler Vilus so that he could "evolve", explained President Laurent Raviot .

An "integral jihadist" with an "exceptional" profile

The magistrate stressed that the accused had "recognized a very important element" by finally admitting his intention to "die with weapons in hand" when he left Syria in the summer of 2015. The Advocate General had, he painted a portrait of an "integral jihadist" with an "exceptional" profile and demanded that he be sentenced to life imprisonment, accompanied by the maximum safety period of 22 years.

Tyler Vilus is one of the first of his generation to reach Syria, at the end of 2012, and one of the rare individuals still alive to have returned. He had appeared in a video showing the execution of two former soldiers imprisoned in the head, broadcast in 2015 by the IS media office, and filmed in Shaddadi, a town in eastern Syria where Tyler Vilus lived for several months, officiating as an Islamic policeman according to the prosecution.

Face uncovered, equipped with a walkie-talkie and an automatic pistol, Tyler Vilus stands upright, two meters from the executioners. He always disputed this crime, affirming at the hearing that he was there a little by chance "at the exit of the mosque".

He will be retried for criminal criminal criminal association, for leading a group of combatants and for "murder in an organized gang" in connection with a terrorist enterprise.
