This year there will be no 'operation crossing the Strait'. Spain will not be crossed by more than three million Moroccans and Algerians who travel the entire peninsula to spend their holidays in their countries of origin because Morocco has decided to keep its land borders of Ceuta and Melilla and its maritime connections with Spain closed.

The Alawite Kingdom will allow Moroccans or resident foreigners who travel from the French port of Sète or from Genoa, in Italy, as well as by plane from July 15, to enter the country. By air, Rabat will open its connections with Spain, but it is expected that only a minority of the almost three million Moroccans who travel the peninsula each year end up buying a plane ticket in our country to travel to their homeland. . Of course, this summer Morocco will be closed to tourism because foreign travelers will not be able to enter by any means.

Morocco has reported all these changes in an official statement from the Ministries of the Interior, Foreign Affairs and Health. The text does not explain the reason for keeping maritime connections with Spain closed while opening two ports in France and Italy. Diplomatic sources point out that Rabat thus intends to discourage travelers who usually return to their country in the summer to minimize the risk of importing infections from Europe. With these restrictions, a large part of the almost three million Moroccans who returned to the country through Spanish ports, many from France or Belgium, will stay in Europe this summer.

Citizens entering Morocco will have to undergo a PCR test for less than 48 hours before boarding. And it is not excluded that during the journey these Covid-19 screening tests are also performed. Everyone can then leave the country by the same means in which they arrived.

Morocco has been one of the strictest states with the closure of its external borders since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. In fact, it has not even allowed to return to its nationals who were away when the connections were blocked contrary to what the European countries have done, which have repatriated their citizens.
