King Felipe VI has presided over this Monday the act of celebration of the 40 years of the Constitutional Court to which the main authorities of the country have attended. In his speech, before the watchful eyes of the members of the Court of guarantees, the monarch highlighted the role of the High Court as "key institution of our constitutional architecture" and underlined its role in "a period that has made coexistence possible in freedom among the Spanish, based on democratic principles guaranteed by respect for the law as an expression of the general will of the citizens. " "This court has become an effective defender of democratic guarantees and, therefore, a guarantor par excellence of our democracy, of Spanish democracy," stressed the head of state.

In the solemn act, Felipe de Borbón has praised "the essential work as the highest interpreter and jurisdictional defender of our fundamental norm, not only of its letter but also of its spirit" at the same time that he has emphasized that the Constitution, "expressing the sovereign will of the Spanish people, configured the Constitutional Court as the supreme guarantee of the Rule of Law, in which all public powers must be subject "to the Magna Carta and" to the rest of the legal system and in which all citizens they have rights and freedoms that the public powers must respect. "

Specifically, the king has highlighted the "essential work in the recognition and protection of the rights and freedoms of the citizens of the TC; its decisive and decisive contribution in the territorial articulation of the State, reconciling its unity and its diversity; its defense, in short, the principle of submission of all powers to the Constitution and the Law, ensuring that controversies in political life are resolved through the legal procedures provided in our legal system. "

For his part, during his speech, the president of the Constitutional Court, Juan José González Rivas, has appealed "the dignity of the person and the principles of institutional loyalty, justice, solidarity and submission to the law and law" as essential elements within framework of political coexistence. González Rivas has highlighted the organ's work after 40 years as "supreme interpreter" of the Magna Carta, a task that supposes "a challenge and a permanent responsibility".
