President Jair Bolsonaro once again watered down the law on the wearing of masks in public places on Monday, which is no longer mandatory in overcrowded prisons in Brazil, in the midst of a coronavirus pandemic.
In a new version of the text published in the Official Journal, the head of state also used his right of veto to delete an article forcing businesses to display signs explaining how to properly use a mask.
And now the prisons
Friday, when promulgating this law previously approved by Congress, the first on the subject at the national level, he had already deleted several articles which made in particular the wearing of the mask compulsory in shops, factories and places of worship.
On Monday, an article on "wearing masks in penal establishments" was in turn removed from the text.
With regard to shops, the deleted article stipulated the obligation to "display informative signs on the correct use of masks and on the maximum number of people authorized in establishments".
Bolsonaro always appears without mask in Brasilia
The wearing of the mask had already been made compulsory for several weeks in many states, by decrees issued by the governors. The coronavirus has killed more than 64,000 people in Brazil.
Last week, President Bolsonaro obtained on appeal the cancellation of a judgment personally forcing him to wear a mask in public in Brasilia, where the population is obliged to wear one.
On Saturday, the head of state published masked photos on social networks alongside several ministers and the United States ambassador in Brasilia during a lunch to celebrate National Day of the Day. Independence of the United States.
As he was in the official residence of the ambassador, a private property, Jair Bolsonaro did not break the law in force, but he was hit by Internet users accusing him of not setting a good example for the population.
Before the trial judgment requiring him to wear a mask, two weeks ago, he frequently took a walkabout without this accessory, especially near the Presidential Palace of Planalto.
