In a letter to Parliament read by the AFP news agency, the minister writes that gender categories will not be on ID cards "beginning in 2024-2025".

The Minister writes that she "intends, if possible, to limit the unnecessary registration of sex" even if such information would continue to be required in EU passports. The Minister also recalls that the Netherlands will not be the first with ID documents without gender. "The German ID cards require no information on gender".

People should have the opportunity to "create their own identities and live in complete freedom and security," continues van Engelshoven in the letter.
