  • The White House epidemiologist warns that the US could register 100,000 new cases daily if no action is taken

United States President Donald Trump, who has so far avoided being seen in public by wearing a mask, said Wednesday that he would wear one if he was around other people in an effort to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

"I am in favor of masks," Trump told Fox Business Network. "If I was in a difficult situation with people, I absolutely" would use one, he added. In this context, Trump emphasized that "many people have seen him wearing one" and that he "likes" how it fits. "I liked how it fit. I thought it was fine. It was a dark, black mask and I thought it fit."

However, Trump said he did not believe that the use of masks should be mandatory across the country "because there are many places where people are at very great distances."

Trump has become increasingly isolated within the Republican Party for failing to promote the use of the virus mask with the number of infected growing in various states. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Trump's change of heart on this issue was welcome.

In another interview with the Fox News channel, President Trump said the coronavirus "will somehow disappear," with the pandemic numbers still growing worryingly in the US. "I think we are going to be very good with the coronavirus, I think that at some point it will just somehow disappear, I hope so," said Trump, a statement reminiscent of many others he already did in February, before declaring a state of emergency for the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

The United States reached 2,678,202 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 128,028 deaths on Wednesday, according to an independent count by Johns Hopkins University. The average of new daily cases in the United States is since last week above 40,000 dragged by the rebound in southern and western states such as Florida, Texas, California and Arizona.
