The Commission begins its work while the pandemic is still ongoing, which makes it difficult to draw certain conclusions. Kutson points out that mortality in Sweden has been high, that elderly people have been hit hard by the infection, and socio-economically vulnerable areas have been hit hard.

- And it has been a big problem for the government and the Public Health Authority to start a large-scale testing in the country. These are issues that will be examined, where the government's actions, or lack of action, will be evaluated, says SVT's internal political commentator Mats Knutson.

May have far-reaching political consequences

The results will be presented by the Commission before the next parliamentary elections in 2022, and this could have far-reaching political consequences.

- We can look at the Disaster Commission that was appointed after the 2004 tsunami. It contained sharp criticism of the government's actions then, and was a contributing reason for the Social Democratic government losing the 2006 election, says Mats Knutson.

He also points out that the Commission's work can mean that you start to question the Swedish model of administration, where you divide the responsibility between government and authorities and where municipalities and regions have great independence.

- Has it negatively affected the possibilities for Sweden to deal with the spread of infection? There are some issues that will be evaluated by this commission, says Mats Knutson.
