7:25 am: Perpignan, the great take of the National Rally

With its 120,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city conquered by the RN since Toulon (1995-2001). The "republican front" did not work in Perpignan, where the RN candidate Louis Aliot won with 53.1 to 54% of the vote against the outgoing mayor Jean-Marc Pujol (LR), according to estimates. "A symbolic victory" and "a real trigger, because we will also be able to demonstrate that we are capable of managing large communities," said Marine Le Pen.

The RN also wins the cities of Moissac (Tarn-et-Garonne), Bruay-la-Buissière (Pas-de-Calais), but does not succeed in winning at Carpentras (Vaucluse).

7:23 am: Why so much abstention?

Among the 16.5 million voters called to vote in 4,820 municipalities for the second round of municipal elections, many of them shunned the ballot. The participation rate is between 40% and 41% compared to 62.1% in 2014.

This historic abstention is part of the health crisis linked to the coronavirus epidemic, which has hampered voters, despite strengthened health measures, while the candidates were almost unable to campaign, three months after a first turn already marked by a strong abstention.

7:19 am: Failure for Agnès Buzyn in Paris

She had to go to Paris, she will not even be an adviser to Paris. Agnès Buzyn, former Minister of Health who left her post to replace Benjamin Griveaux at short notice in February, only arriving in third position, did not manage to obtain enough votes to become a councilor in Paris. A heavy blow for LREM.

7:08 am: Situation still confused in Marseille

The situation is more confused in Marseille where the environmental candidate Michèle Rubirola, at the head of a left coalition, has claimed a "relative victory" after 25 years of reign of the right. But the candidate LR Martine Vassal insisted that there was at this stage "no majority in Marseille", giving an appointment to the election of the mayor by the municipal council next Friday.

7:35 am: It's not a wave, but a green surge

Lyon, Bordeaux, Strasbourg ... by winning a historic number of big cities, the Greens emerge grand victors from the municipal elections, a reality which Emmanuel Macron will have to take into account when receiving the members of the Citizens' Climate Convention on Monday.
