The forces were balanced, the noise was similar and the enclave in which they coincided, the same, but the nature of the three groups of people who met on the Plaza de España in Pontevedra on Saturday afternoon could not be more diverse. They were gathered, each in a corner, Vox supporters who attended an Ortega Smith rally, young anti-fascists protesting their presence in their city and a group of self-employed who had nothing to do with the struggle of the first two, but who were peppered by the situation.

And suddenly, to spice up the scene and turn it into the purest vaudeville style, a girl dressed as First Communion burst into the square . She sped up her pace not to be peppered by an environment that at times heated up and threatened to clash, but nothing prevented such an improbable scene from becoming part of the family album.

While a group of anti-fascists asked "to go" and cheered "Long live the Republic" or "Foró fascistas da nosa cidade (outside fascists of our city", from the other side they welcomed "the puppies of Churches" and transferred them that “your contempt is another reason to continue fighting for Galicia.” Without eating or drinking it, the self-employed only asked to be able to remain silent and transfer their historical demands to citizens and rulers.

The atmosphere was so heated at times that the screams of anti-fascists and Vox sympathizers made it impossible to hear the other's message and almost silenced the megaphone that the freelancers used to call their own to concentrate on the farthest corner of the square and give volume to the parody "The Autonomous", which reproduces his demands in a comedy tone.

Three groups fighting for the same square and provoking each other that seasoned the second day of the electoral campaign for the July 12 elections in Galicia. At times, it came to threaten a violent outcome and, to calm tempers, seven patrols of the Local and National Police of Pontevedra stood as a shield between Vox supporters and anti-fascists. They did not prevent each other from provoking themselves with insults and gestures of contempt and trying to approach the opposite.

The fight for the square was not part of the plans of a group of several dozen freelancers from all over the province to hold the same demonstration in Pontevedra that at the same time, seven thirty in the afternoon, was reproduced throughout Spain . Wearing a black shirt and mask and the pockets outside, they came to claim "we are self-employed, not cashiers" and to keep a minute of silence for those who died of the coronavirus and for their own collective, but they ended up struggling to be heard.

Two authorized acts

From the organization they assured EL MUNDO that weeks ago they communicated their concentration in the Plaza de España and this was also confirmed by official sources from the Government Subdelegation, who recalled that the Plaza de España is not considered an electoral venue. However, the coincidence with the Vox meeting was possible because those of Santiago Abascal had requested - and had authorized - an act in the Alameda de Pontevedra, just next door.

The limits between plaza and Alameda are blurred and those of Vox, who could have chosen any point in the aforementioned Alameda, were located right on the corner with Plaza de España. Both, a priori, had authorization, but the political act was interpreted as provocation by some of the self-employed who came to demonstrate.

From the organization of the concentration, María Rey only wanted to transfer "those who speak of freedom" who "relegate the self-employed to a corner of the Plaza de España" and asked them "to give themselves a little point in the mouth before to speak on our behalf ", because" Vox does not speak on behalf of the self-employed ".

The presence of the Vox and anti-fascists who came to protest when they knew they would be there, prevented the self-employed from being able to keep a minute of silence for the victims, since screams and proclamations were heard in the background. Finally, a rain as weak as disagreeing an hour after the start of such a singular scene managed to calm the spirits and dissolve without going beyond the insults and a kiss between two women to the cry of "Long live free love."
