Terrible balance sheet. At least 107 people were killed Thursday in India after being struck by lightning during the monsoon thunderstorms, official sources said.

Some 83 people died in the state of Bihar (east) and 24 others in the state of Uttar Pradesh (north). Dozens of others were injured. Deadly lightning strikes are quite common in India during the monsoon, which lasts from June to September.

More than 2,000 dead since 2018

According to Lakshmeshwar Rai, the Minister for Emergency Situations in Bihar State, this is one of the heaviest daily reports in recent years.

More than 2,300 people have been killed by lightning in India since 2018, according to official statistics.
