A Strasbourg peacekeeper was sentenced on Tuesday to 18 months in prison suspended by the correctional court of the Alsatian capital. He was found guilty of injuring, via a baton, a "yellow vest" during the demonstration on January 12.

The police officer had struck him at least once in the head that day. The victim, a 62-year-old retiree who walked on a crutch, received eleven stitches. "You had an absurd desire to fight it out at that time," justified the president of the court, Jérôme Lizet, when rendering the verdict. It went further than the requisition of the prosecutor, who had asked for 12 months suspended prison.

"I hope it will set an example for other police violence"

The peacekeeper, 47, will also be deprived of a weapon for five years. Eric W. did not wish to react on leaving the courthouse. His lawyer also did not say whether he wished to appeal.

For her part, Marlène Lutz, the "yellow vest" said she was "relieved". "I hope it will set an example for other police violence," she said, announcing that she would participate in other demonstrations. She will also appear soon for insults to the police.
